The Creature
Corner website recently spoke to actor Andrew Divoff about his work in
the upcoming Faust movie. Divoff plays "M" (or
Mephistopheles) in the adaptation of the David Quinn and Tim Vigil's comic.
Divoff
calls the movie is trippy and talked about the experience of filming the
horror flick in Barcelona. "Once we got into shooting we were in gothic
land," Divoff said. "I mean, Barcelona even has a quarter called
The Gothic Quarter. So, as far as having locations and backdrops that were
perfectly suited to the movie, Barcelona is the place. M's mansion is an
amazing location in and of itself. Natural fog, the mist was really cool. We
didn't have to have a smoke machine there. It was doing it all on it's
own."
Divoff
also talked about his preparation for the part. "I can read a script,
but until I have the make-up and until I'm in the skin, as it were, I don't
really start. Also it's defining the character, picking his wardrobe and
seeing where he lived, that all helped. I already knew all the lines, I knew
the story, but it's weird with me."
The actor
also said he got familiar with the comic books before the cameras rolled. He
feels the movie captures the violent and sexual essence of the comics.
"It's graphic. Absolutely, it does," Divoff said. "Especially
the character, Claire, played by Monica Van Campbell. She's so sexually coy
and playful with her role which is who Claire is. She's wonderful. She
really, really plays it off. She's statuesque."
Faust
is due out on video late this summer.

Comics2Film
spoke with comic and screenwriter David Quinn about the Faust movie
last night. Quinn attended Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors show in New
York last week. There he presented fans with the trailer to the upcoming
film.
Quinn also
told C2F that he and Faust co-creator Tim Vigil saw a
rough cut of the movie a few weeks ago. Both creators enjoyed the film.
"It's exciting to watch. It's very fast-paced. It has a lot of the
horror and the strangeness and the uniqueness of what makes Faust
Faust," Quinn told us.
Although
the movie has minor deviations from Quinn's script, the writer said that
he's satisfied with the changes that were made. "It's nowhere near as
dense and as threatening as the comic book but we've had years and lots of
pages to do that story. This is just a short, single feature, so it has to
be a distillation."
Distilled
as it is, the movie is definitely in keeping with the spirit of the comic.
"A lot of it is literally translated right out of it," Quinn told C2F.
"Other things have been condensed or combined."
Quinn
points to the character of
Detective Dan Margolies, played by Jeffrey Combs, as an example. That
character combines both the cop and journalist character from the comics.
The movie
is due out on video tape and DVD late this summer. Quinn told us that he and
Vigil will be involved with the DVD. "[Director] Brian Yuzna mentioned
that he wanted both of us to do a creators commentary. That would be fun. I
know Brian is also doing a commentary."
A
theatrical release of the movie is possible, but unlikely. However, some of
the comic book conventions have expressed interest in screening it. Quinn is
working to help make the arrangements.
Some
additional goodies are being prepped to follow the release of the movie.
Roadrunner
Records will release the movie's soundtrack on CD.
DarkTales
publications will release a paperback titled Faust: Love of the Damned
Screenplay—The Creators’ Cut.
Quinn is
currently at work on a novelization, due out later this year. It'll be
released as a signed, limited edition hardcover through Dark Muse as well as
a paperback from DarkTales.
Finally
the recently revived Rebel Studios and Re-Animator Records are set to
release a CD called Every Drop of Blood Has a Soul—David Quinn
Speaks. "Over the years I've written a lot of Faust
prose," Quinn told us. "So I'm doing a CD of me reading the
fiction. Some of it will be little bites from the novel. Others will be
longer sections of short stories set in the world of Faust." Quinn said
it'll be a theatrical reading.
At the
aforementioned Fangoria show, Quinn announced that he and Vigil would resume
operations with Rebel Studios this year. Vigil will continue to act as
publisher and art director, while Quinn, handles marketing and licensing. In
August they'll publish Faust Communion Collection, the first
of several trade paperbacks collecting the original Faust Acts. In October,
Rebel will present the beginning of the long-awaited conclusion of Love of
the Damned, Faust Act 12.

review of the upcoming movie based on David Quinn and Tim Vigil's comic Faust

festival last month in Luxembourg, has posted the review

positive and contains spoilers.
Combs

"trying in vain to make his Faustian
mind wreck into a cop movie."

Filmax has
opened their official website promoting the movie Faust: Love of the
Damned at faust.filmax.com.
The studio has put together a moody, Flash-based site that is in keeping
with the tone of the movie. However, the site is a Spanish-language site,
which may frustrate monolingual fans.
An updated
and more revealing trailer for the film can be found on the site. The
QuickTime clip features some new imagery including a glimpse at Jasper's
transformation and some nice shots of the full costume. As with the rest of
the site, the soundtrack for the trailer is also in Spanish. The trailer can
be found under the menu option "el poder."
The
site also features a complete cast and crew listing, production design
sketches, an image gallery, and downloadable wallpaper and screen savers.
You can also join Jasper Johns in drawing red pentagrams in his padded cell.

Comics2Film
recently spoke with Faust director Brian Yuzna about the
recently completed film based on David Quinn and Tim Vigil's comic. Yuzna provides
this account of the movie's recent screening in Barcelona.
|
|
"Faust
screened at Sitges Festival Thursday Oct 12 to sold out audiences and
won best F/X. Mark Frost, myself, Julio Fernandez, Fermi Riexach and
(the soon to be famous) Monica Van Campen introduced the film,"
The director told C2F. "Unfortunately it was a digital to
film transfer so the film lacked detail and sharpness and many late
arriving digital shots were incomplete, but the movie was a success
and has created a great deal of excitement in Spain and Europe for the
Fantastic Factory, the line of Sci-Fi and Horror films that Fernandez
and I are creating along with a studio in Barcelona." |
| Festival
attendees also got a look at other upcoming Yuzna projects.
"Before Faust were screened trailers for the next
Fantastic Factory film, Arachnid directed by Jack
Sholder (The Hidden, Nightmare on Elm Street 2,
Wishmaster 2) and Darkness,
the new movie from hot new director Jaume Balaguero (The
Nameless)," Yuzna told us. |
|
"The
soundtrack of FAUST is bomb and the CD will be available next month in North
America from Roadrunner Records," Yuzna said. The soundtrack includes
music from Sepultura, Fear Factory, Nailbomb, Machine Head, Soulfly and
others.
Yuzna went
on to say, "Faust will screen at San Sebastian Fantastic
Festival next week and November 12 at the Stockholm Festival. It will be
released in Europe (in its finished form) next February. American audiences
should start emailing the hell out of Trimark
Pictures and Lion's Gate who own the North American rights demanding to
see Faust in movie theatres as soon as possible."
Comics2Film
checked in with Lion's Gate to see what the plans were for the movie. We
were assured that that Faust will definitely be available to
American audiences. Lion's Gate only recently acquired the North American
rights in a "negative pickup." They haven't seen the movie yet,
but will be screening it this week in London and next week in Milan. After
the right people have seen the movie Trimark and Lion's Gate will develop a
strategy for releasing the movie, be it theatrical or some other means.
In the
mean time, M. Terry Jackson of TBL
Magazine directs fans to an online trailer which was recently posted at
the Stockholm
International Film Festival website. The trailer provides readers with a
pretty decent look at the character in costume.
