It's
been a couple of years since fans heard anything about a movie based on
Mark Hamill's comic The Black Pearl. Rehme Productions had
taken an option on the property back in 1997 and Hamill had written a
screenplay for it.
This
week a source at Rehme told Comics2Film that they are no longer
developing the property. The option has expired and the rights have
reverted back to Hamill.
The
Black Pearl was published as a limited series by Dark Horse Comics
in 1997. It told the story of a troubled
man-turned-vigilante who is thrust into the role of costumed hero by our media-driven
society. |

A source at Rehme Productions told
Comics2Film that they are still working to bring Mark Hamill's comic The
Black Pearl to the silver screen. It was widely reported over a year
ago that Rehme had purchased the rights to Hamill's story of a troubled
man-turned-vigilante who is thrust into the role of costumed hero by our media-driven
society. The screenplay for the movie has been written by Hamill, who also wrote the
comic which was published by Dark Horse in 1997. Our source told us
that they are currently working to attract a director and actors and hope to gain studio
backing for the project in the coming months.

This report reiterates the Variety article,
but also mentions that Hamill would like to direct the movie. Hamill is quoted as saying,
"And that's a stumbling block because I don't have a track record. The whole idea was
to design a modestly budgeted picture that would be enhanced by its modest budget, rather
than be hurt by it, and still make it within my grasp to direct. I'm not expecting to walk
into a $65 million production and have someone hand me the reins -- nor would I want to do
that."

Rehme Productions has optioned film and TV
rights to Mark (Star Wars) Hamill's screenplay The
Black Pearl. The screenplay is based on Hamill's limited comics series
published this year by Dark Horse Comics. The comic tells the story of a
troubled voyeur whose costumed vigilantism sparks a media frenzy. "The
Black Pearl is a taut, focused tale of gray morality," says Robert
Rehme, founder and chief of Rehme Prods. and current president of the Academy
of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, "This is not a superhero saga. It's a
mix of tabloid thriller, romance and adventure."
